The Chote Sahibzade, Baba Zorawar Singh (9 years old) and Baba Fateh Singh (6 years old), the youngest sons of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, attained martyrdom in Sirhind on December 26, 1705. After being separated from their family following the battle of Chamkaur, they were betrayed and handed over to the Mughal governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan. The young Sahibzade were subjected to immense pressure to convert to Islam, but they remained steadfast in their Sikh faith. As a result, Wazir Khan ordered them to be bricked alive. When the wall collapsed, they were executed. Their grandmother, Mata Gujri Ji, also breathed her last in captivity upon hearing the news.
Following their martyrdom, Deewan Todar Mal, a wealthy Hindu merchant and a devout follower of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, played a crucial role in performing their final rites. Since Wazir Khan demanded gold coins in exchange for land for cremation, Todar Mal Ji selflessly paid by laying gold coins over the required area. With great devotion, he ensured that the Chote Sahibzade and Mata Gujri Ji were given proper cremation. This supreme sacrifice and Todar Mal’s unwavering faith remain an unparalleled chapter of Sikh history, commemorated at Fatehgarh Sahib today.
